Photography by Ian Marshall is shaped by curiosity, close observation and a long engagement with place. His practice moves between personal projects, commissioned work and collaborations with other artists. Across these different settings, he uses the camera to explore memory, environment and the everyday experience of living in Queensland. Marshall’s background in industry, community welfare and professional photography also informs the way he approaches people and places. Rather than working from a single fixed style, he allows each project to develop from its subject. Marshall’s photography therefore reflects both experience and inquiry, bringing together technical skill, personal history and a sustained interest in how photographs can help us understand the world around us.
Ian Marshall is a Brisbane-based photographer with a varied professional background and a lifelong connection to photography.
Photography has remained an important part of his life throughout several careers. Marshall first worked as an electrician on major mining and industrial projects in Queensland. Later, he became an Anglican priest and worked in community welfare. He subsequently established a professional photographic practice, working with a range of clients while continuing to develop independent art projects.
Marshall completed a Master of Visual Arts by Research with Honours at the Australian National University in 2014. He has also participated in photographic organisations and communities across Australia. These include the Canberra Photographic Society, Canberra PhotoConnect, Photo Access, the Australian Photographic Society, Melbourne Camera Club, Wynnum Bayside Camera Club and the Fine Print Monochrome Group.
Living in Brisbane gives Marshall plenty of opportunities to photograph the city and the landscape around it. He is drawn to places, people and everyday experiences that make him want to look more closely.
