Photography by Jillian Barker explores dreams, fantasy and the emotional possibilities of portraiture. Based in Brisbane, Barker works with both analogue and digital photography. Her images often move away from everyday reality and into imagined worlds that feel theatrical, painterly and dreamlike.
Barker has maintained a close relationship with photography for around fifteen years. Portraiture sits at the centre of her practice, although her photographs are rarely spontaneous records of a sitter. Instead, she begins by developing a concept and mood. She then considers the lighting, setting, wardrobe and props that may help bring the idea to life.
Although her shoots are carefully planned, Barker allows room for collaboration and unexpected discoveries. She works with each sitter while photographing, rather than following a fixed shot list. This approach lets the subject contribute ideas and helps the finished work retain a sense of movement and surprise.
Barker uses a wide range of creative techniques, including slow shutter speeds, intentional camera movement, soft focus, multiple exposures and experimental lighting. She also combines continuous light with flash, light painting and stroboscopic effects. These methods allow her to suggest the passage of time within a still image and give her portraits an expressive, almost otherworldly quality.
Analogue photography remains an important part of Barker’s practice. She works with film, prints in the darkroom and experiments with processes such as combining negatives during printing. At the same time, she uses digital photography when it best suits the pace or technical demands of a project.
In 2024, Barker was recognised as a winner of Lomography’s Poetry in Motion LomoMission for a long-exposure portrait created with movement and stroboscopic flash. Rather than impose one fixed meaning on her photographs, she hopes they encourage viewers to explore their own memories, dreams and imagination.
