Mick Lord is a Brisbane-based Australian fine art photographer whose work explores both the natural and built environments. Over many years, his practice has evolved from observing the wider landscape to examining the places and people closest to home, creating photographs that encourage careful looking and quiet reflection.
Photography has been central to Mick’s creative life since his youth. Today, he is President of the Fine Monochrome Print Group, where he supports the development of fine art photography and traditional printmaking among its members. His work has been shaped by the photography of Paul Strand and Eugène Atget, whose thoughtful observations of everyday life continue to influence his approach.
In recent years, Mick has turned his attention to his immediate surroundings. His family, home, friends and suburban landscapes have become the subjects of a more personal body of work. Rather than simply recording a scene, he seeks to reveal something beyond its surface. As he describes it:
“I am not only photographing what is. I am photographing what else it is.”
Working predominantly in monochrome, Mick combines analogue and digital techniques to produce expressive fine art photographs. He continues to work with film and values the tactile experience of developing negatives and making prints in the darkroom. Historical printing methods, including platinum and palladium printing, play an important role in his practice, allowing him to create richly detailed prints with exceptional tonal depth.
Digital technology also forms part of Mick’s workflow. However, he uses it as a practical extension of his analogue practice rather than a replacement. This combination allows him to preserve the craftsmanship of traditional photography while benefiting from the precision and flexibility of contemporary techniques.
Mick Lord has presented solo exhibitions and has exhibited extensively with the Fine Monochrome Print Group. His photographs reflect a lifelong commitment to fine art photography, careful observation and the expressive possibilities of monochrome printing.
