Richard Stringer PhD AM
is an Australian architectural photographer whose work documents buildings, places and the histories they hold. Originally trained as an architect, he brought a strong understanding of design to his photographic practice.
From the beginning, Richard viewed photography as more than a record of appearance. He used it to reveal structure, purpose and the relationship between a building and its surroundings. His knowledge of architecture also shaped the way he worked with light, form and proportion.

PHOTOGRAPHING AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE
During his career, Richard photographed many significant Australian buildings. Most notably, he documented the construction of the Sydney Opera House through its various stages.
Richard was the only photographer granted on-site access throughout its construction. This opportunity allowed him to record the building as it gradually took shape. The resulting photographs provide an important visual history of one of the world’s most recognised architectural landmarks.
However, Richard’s photographs do more than document design and construction. They also show the people, materials and working processes behind the finished building. Therefore, the archive has value as both an architectural record and a part of Australia’s social history.
