Relinquished Presence

Relinquished Presence is a photographic investigation into the limits of self-representation and the gap between intention and effect. In a culture where identity is increasingly mediated through curated images and standardised visual codes, this body of work considers what happens when a person sits before a camera with nothing to perform, yet still searches for a settled sense of self.

The project draws on Irving Penn’s corner portraits, in which sitters were positioned within a narrow, angled space that constrained movement and stripped away the usual social cues of a portrait session. Relinquished Presence adapts this principle into what I call a pressure field: a minimal studio with constant lighting and no direction, designed to remove the props of performance and leave the sitter with only themselves. The result is a sustained encounter between viewer and sitter, free from the rehearsed performance of a camera face and allowing the sitter to drift into a state of being rather than performing.

The portraits are presented as a typology of self-knowledge in progress. Through chiaroscuro lighting and a consistent, minimal visual language, the work attends to the minute details of the human face and to moments when the constructed self loosens. It does not seek to reveal a settled truth beneath, but to show a person mid-search. A small number of sitters appear apart from this state—present and arrived. This contrast is deliberate, asking the viewer to consider what searching for oneself and knowing oneself might look like side by side.

By embracing the unfinished and unresolved, Relinquished Presence documents the physical and psychological realities that emerge when the work of self-representation is suspended. The resulting portraits form a record of shared uncertainty, offering a quiet counterpoint to the filtered self in a visually saturated age.
