This Viewing Room presents Alex Buckingham Pre-Raphaelite photography, inspired by the paintings of J. W. Waterhouse. The series draws on the rich colour, symbolism and contemplative mood associated with the Pre-Raphaelite tradition.

Buckingham does not recreate specific paintings. Instead, he interprets their atmosphere through carefully staged photographic portraits. As a result, the images evoke the poetic stillness and romantic sensibility of nineteenth-century painting while remaining firmly contemporary.

Artist Statement

This series is my tribute to the work of J. W. Waterhouse and the enduring influence of Pre-Raphaelite imagery. I have long been drawn to the quiet intensity of these paintings and their rich colour, symbolism and sense of suspended time.

Through photography, I explore how this visual language can be reinterpreted today. Rather than reproducing particular works, I focus on mood and atmosphere. Consequently, each image becomes a contemporary reflection on a historic artistic tradition.
