Colainnscéal (pronounced KOL-in-shkel) is the Irish word for Body Story.

Colainnscéal (Body Story) is a series of silver gelatin photographs by Neil Moorhead that explores the body through fragments rather than complete forms. Cropped closely and photographed in black and white, the images move beyond portraiture to become studies of shape, light and shadow.

The photographs reveal only part of the subject. Curves, folds and surfaces emerge from darkness, while the wider context remains hidden. This limited view changes the way the body is read. It becomes less familiar and more abstract, inviting attention to form rather than identity.

By withholding information, Neil encourages a slower way of looking. The viewer must spend time with each image and consider what lies beyond the frame. The photographs do not offer a single meaning. Instead, they leave room for uncertainty, memory and personal interpretation.

Although each work can stand alone, the series becomes more powerful when viewed as a sequence. The changing viewpoints create a quiet visual rhythm. One image leads into the next through subtle shifts in tone, scale and composition. Together, they suggest a body experienced over time rather than captured in a single moment.

Neil works with analogue photography and traditional silver gelatin printing. The process gives the photographs a rich tonal range, from deep blacks to delicate areas of grey. It also brings a tactile quality to the finished prints, reinforcing the intimacy of the subject.

In Colainnscéal (Body Story), the body appears as both physical presence and lived record. Its surfaces carry traces of age, experience and memory. Rather than presenting the figure as spectacle, the series asks viewers to consider the body as something private, changing and deeply personal.

The photographs remain deliberately restrained. They do not explain or resolve the subject. Instead, they invite careful observation and allow meaning to unfold gradually through light, shadow and what remains unseen.
