Denis Piel One Picture Show presents a 2018 Maud Gallery exhibition built around a single photograph from the artist’s Down to Earth series.

Originally produced as part of Piel’s Down to Earth series, the image was presented on its own, allowing its ambiguities to remain open and unresolved. A simple arrangement of fabric and plant form becomes quietly suggestive, inviting psychological and bodily associations without ever settling into a single reading.

Rather than directing interpretation, the photograph relies on restraint. The image sits somewhere between landscape, still life and metaphor, holding tension through touch, surface and concealment. In isolating one work from the larger Down to Earth series, One Picture Show slowed the viewing experience down to a single sustained encounter.

CURATORIAL NOTE

The strength of One Picture Show lay in its refusal to explain itself.

Presented alone, the photograph created space for projection and uncertainty. Denis Piel allows the image to hover between formal composition and suggestion, never fully confirming what the viewer thinks they recognise. The work depends on that hesitation. Its tension comes not from spectacle, but from what remains implied.
