Imaginings is a series of monochrome photographs by Murray Thompson that explores abstract forms through close-up and tabletop photography. His practice has developed over many decades and reflects a long-standing commitment to black and white image-making.

A Lifetime in Photography

Joining a camera club encouraged Murray to build his own darkroom. There, he developed both his technical skills and his appreciation for monochrome printing. Over the years, he photographed many different subjects and gradually refined his understanding of light, form and composition.

As time passed, changes in age and mobility led him in a new direction. Rather than seeing these changes only as limitations, Murray began to focus more closely on macro photography. This form of close-up and tabletop photography allows him to work with small subjects in a thoughtful and controlled way.

Through this approach, familiar objects reveal unexpected details, textures and relationships. Shape, pattern and tonal contrast become central to the image. As a result, the photographs move beyond simple description and begin to suggest abstraction.

Inviting Personal Interpretation

In Imaginings, Murray Thompson invites viewers to slow down and look carefully. His images do not prescribe a single meaning. Instead, they leave space for memory, imagination and individual response.

Although the photographs begin with ordinary subjects, they encourage a different way of seeing. Small details can suggest landscapes, structures or forms that feel unfamiliar. In this way, the work reflects Murray’s continuing interest in discovery and the expressive possibilities of monochrome photography.

Ultimately, the series shows how creativity can continue to evolve over time. Each photograph offers a quiet encounter with form, texture and light, while allowing every viewer to bring their own interpretation to the image.
