Infrared Landscapes

is a series of photographs by Warren Vievers that explores the distinctive visual qualities of infrared photography. Created around an unnamed tidal creek near Manning Esplanade in Thornlands, within Redland City, the series reveals familiar landscapes in unexpected ways through infrared light.

The four photographs all depict the same creek and surrounding wetlands. Each image presents a different viewpoint and interpretation of the landscape. Reflections, changing perspectives and subtle variations in composition encourage viewers to look more carefully at a place that might otherwise be overlooked.

The Infrared Process

Infrared photography transforms the appearance of the natural environment. Infrared filtration suppresses blue wavelengths, so water often appears deep charcoal or black. At the same time, vegetation becomes luminous and richly textured. These tonal relationships create an atmosphere that feels both familiar and surreal.

The wetlands surrounding the creek contain dense vegetation and numerous melaleuca trees. They respond particularly well to the infrared process. Light, water and reflected surfaces become the defining elements of each photograph. Together, they reveal patterns and textures that are largely invisible in conventional colour photography.

Warren Vievers created these photographs using a digital camera that was converted specifically for infrared photography. While photographers can simulate infrared effects through post-processing, he prefers capturing infrared light directly at the moment of exposure. This approach produces subtle tonal relationships that cannot always be replicated later.

A Different Way of Seeing

Rather than documenting the landscape in a literal way, Infrared Landscapes invites viewers to experience the environment through tone, contrast and atmosphere. The series demonstrates how a familiar location can be transformed through photographic process. It also encourages viewers to discover fresh perspectives on the wetlands of Redland City and the quiet beauty of Queensland’s coastal landscape.
