Rodents Mort forms part of Jeff Moorfoot’s ongoing Scan works, where the flatbed scanner replaces the camera as both tool and stage. In these Jeff Moorfoot scans, the surface becomes a site of direct encounter—holding the remains of small animals with a steady, matter-of-fact clarity.

Moorfoot arranges these fragments with restraint. There is no theatrical gesture, only placement: bone against ground, space against form. Many of the works settle into triptychs, where repetition and symmetry introduce a quiet order. The compositions feel resolved, but never fixed—held in a balance that acknowledges both structure and fragility.

The scanner records without interpretation. Surface, breakage, dust and void sit side by side, given equal weight. Nothing is disguised, but nothing is pushed. The work resists both sentiment and drama, asking instead for a slower reading—one that moves between detail and overall form, between what is present and what has passed.

Short text fragments appear alongside the images, drawn from familiar rhymes and phrases but slightly unsettled in their phrasing. They don’t explain the work; they shift its tone.
