Born in London and now based in Brisbane, Alex Buckingham studied fine art before turning to photography — a foundation that continues to shape the visual language of his work.
Over five decades, Buckingham has developed an extensive photographic practice alongside a distinguished international career in advertising. While producing major commercial campaigns, he steadily built independent bodies of work spanning still life, botanical studies, landscapes and pop-influenced imagery. His projects are often grounded in research and art-historical reference, with an emphasis on light, composition and crafted detail.
Buckingham exhibits annually at Maud Gallery, Brisbane. His works are held in private collections worldwide and are represented in Australia by The Designer Boys, Sydney.
Alongside his fine art practice, Buckingham has received international recognition including awards at Cannes Lions, D&AD, Clio, The One Show and the Art Directors Club New York. In 2014 he was ranked among the world’s leading advertising photographers by Lürzer’s Archive.
Despite global commissions and industry honours, his focus remains personal image-making — the slow development of photographic collections shaped across fifty years of sustained curiosity and discipline.
