Within Without is Julian Pearce’s photographic response to James Turrell’s monumental Skyspace sculpture in the grounds of the National Gallery of Australia.

At the centre of the sculpture stands a stupa constructed from Victorian basalt. Julian places this form at the centre of his images, using its geometry and surrounding architecture to explore the changing relationships between light, shadow and interior space.

The photographs form a free-ranging investigation of the sculpture rather than a conventional architectural record. Made with an iPhone, they allowed Julian to respond spontaneously to shifts in viewpoint, tone and illumination as he moved through the work.

This approach contrasts with his usual practice, which involves medium and large format film cameras and carefully made silver gelatin or platinum-palladium prints. In Within Without, the immediacy of the phone camera becomes part of the work, supporting a more intuitive study of James Turrell’s architecture and its effects on perception.
